Learning How to Image Target and Blender

Updated: Oct 1, 2022

During class, I mainly explored Unity and got used to the new interface, having a test around what type of effects and objects I could make.

I found sculpting in Unity interesting and remembered another 3d sculpting software I was introduced to last year called Blender. I then looked into if one of the models could be transferred from Blender into Unity which it could, which now opens up a world of possibilities with the models and things I can place for the Image Trace task.

I had assistance with learning how to transfer an asset from blender to unity and found I needed to export it as a .fxb file and then simply drag it into assets, and it worked.

I have never thoroughly looked into nor learned how to use Blender, but I did have a testing model which I used for this experiment. It all worked even within the Augmented Reality space, which got me even more excited about all the possibilities this could bring forth.

After Lecture & Tutorial

So after learning about this, I have been watching some basic tutorials on Blender so that I will be able to create models that I can use for later assessment items.

Tips and Steps to using Blender

  • Try to make square faces

  • Always apply scale, helps with rendering etc.

  • Right-click shade smooth to get smooth lighting rather than flat

  • It is an illustration

  • To get rid of the jagged silhouette you need a Subdivision Surface (basically creates smaller segments for rounder surface)

    • Do this by adding a modifier

      • Go to wrench

      • Add modifier

      • Click subdivision surface (very important one)

        • Keep as low as possible for when working on the object but then can bring it to like a 1 or 2 for when rendering

  • Edit mode will make the mesh appear→ tab

    • A single point is called a vertex multiple is called a vertices

    • Using the same hot keys for moving the camera you can move the vertices

    • Proportional editing multiple vertices rather than one or a few at a time

  • Reuse as much of mesh as possible when you can

  • Toggling x-ray so to select an upper half and to get all the points this would be best
